Stephen Vincent is a founding member and attorney at State 48. Stephen has a passion for the law and teaching. He has combined those loves as the head of new client intake and head of legal education programs. He also is the firm’s main researcher and works on all appellate cases.
Stephen Vincent, Attorney, is a lifelong writer who uses this skill to explain clearly and memorably a client’s case to judges. A native of St. George, Utah, Stephen attended Arizona State University for law school where he interned for the Goldwater Institute and worked as a Justice Court mediator. After law school, Stephen worked for a year at the Washington County (Utah) Attorney’s Office. While there, he drafted county ordinances, assisted in homicide prosecutions, and headed up a major project to protect the county’s access to federal lands.
Before law school, Stephen worked as a sportswriter in Utah. He has also taught writing and communication courses at Southern Utah University and Dixie State University. Because of his background as a professional writer and writing instructor, Stephen is the ideal person to tell your story. Stephen loves sports and spending time with his 24 nieces and nephews.
What is the most common question you hear on a day-to-day basis?
The question I get asked most often is some form of the question of, What can I do? What comes before that question varies quite a bit and covers a wide ranger of legal topics, but people call me wanting to know what their options are. To answer their questions and give them all their options takes experience and a significant amount of time studying the law and the various options the law provides, and I pride myself on being able to answer any of those questions related to family law and giving clients all their options.
What family law case type interests you the most and why?
I prefer appeals and reconsiderations because they are so difficult but so rewarding when you succeed. We often have people coming to us asking us to fix something that went wrong for them at trial. To do that, whether we’re doing an appeal (asking the Court of Appeals to change the ruling) or a reconsideration (which covers a variety of options for asking a court to change its ruling). It is a challenge to identify a legal error and explain why it’s an error and persuade a judge or the Court of Appeals that this is something that needs to be fixed.
What do you like to do to de-stress from the work week?
Pottery painting is my big thing. When I first started in family law, the stress was overwhelming because we deal with such difficult, emotional cases. But one day, a friend took me pottery painting, and I could just feel the stress melt away as I painted. So I’ve made it a regular part of my life to make sure I visit As You Wish at least once a week to get the stress out of my system. Beyond that, I like watching sitcoms and Judge Judy, have a love for dogs and watching sports. I come from a big family (five siblings, 28 nieces and nephews), and most of them are in St. George, and I love spending time with them, so whenever I get a chance to take a vacation, St. George is my destination.
What clients really love about working with Stephen is his ability to listen and assess a legal matter with a clear and concise vision of the facts. Stephen is our resident go-to attorney in the office when someone needs clarification or dissection of the law. He prides himself on creating pathways to problems with immediate needs and puts groundwork in for long term success for individuals and helps co-parents recognize the needs of their child before the needs of themselves.
See what Stephen’s clients have to say:
“Stephen stands out for his professionalism, and his desire to advocate for children and their best interest. The area where he is able to help with this the most and where he truly shines is his ability to tell your unique story to the judge. He is the best writer I have ever met, bar none. You only need to read my pretrial statement to see how talented he is. I described my pretrial statement as his magnum opus. I hope Stephen knows how grateful I will always be to him for all the hard work and exceptional writing he did in my case.”
